Congressional Financial Transparency Bill

"Financial Accountability"

All members of Congress are required to release their tax returns for every year that they are in public service. This does not apply to the years spent in the private sector, unemployed, in college, or during a campaign, unless the member held an elected position paid for by taxpayers.

The purpose of this is to ensure that the members of Congress are not using their positions of power for personal enrichment. Serving in Congress is about serving the public, the American people, not serving one’s own self-interests.

If a Member of Congress has had a substantial increase in net worth, that member will be investigated to ensure that the increase has a reasonable explanation.

A member of Congress that has been found to be using his or her position for self-enrichment can be censured, fined, reprimanded, recalled, or expelled, depending on the severity.
